Do Not Go Back to Herod

December 30, 2014

The Magi followed a star to Jesus, reports the Gospel of Matthew. On their way, they stopped in Jerusalem and inquired of King Herod "Where is the newborn king of the Jews?" Herod called in the chief priests and they all said  Bethlehem. So the Magi went off and found Jesus and his mother. And then warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went home a different way.

So, I wonder about what happens when we find Jesus? Do we understand something so remarkable about the world of power and the world of God that we have the courage not to go back to Herod and Herod-like things? I wonder if it isn't so much easier to try to make the two co-exist because there is so much that Herod represents that is just to tempting not to return to.
