What do we believe about Miracles
We believe the nature and workings of God far exceed our understanding and even our imagining.
We believe the nature and workings of God to be abundantly loving and life-giving for all of God's creation.
We believe that humanity is capable of great things through the Spirit of God, but is also capable of misinterpreting and misunderstanding the nature and workings of God.
What United Methodists believe about miracles is not in the form of a doctrine handed to us to memorize. What we believe about miracles is much like what we believe about many other things - individual interpretations based on one's understanding of scripture, tradition, experience, and reason; all tempered and enlightened by a faithful community's understanding of scripture, tradition, experience, and reason.
Our understanding of the Gospel miracles of Jesus, especially as found in John, is that they were intended to help those who witnessed them to believe in Jesus.
